MobileCast 3.0 BETA Now Available!

MobileCast 3.0 Beta-1 just became available in cydia!
This means that you will need a jailbroken device (running the 2.x firmware). If you don’t know how to jailbreak, please check out pwnage.

You can send feedback (bug reports etc) on the beta to mc-beta@podgrove.com. The app is quite functional, you can download and playback both audio & video podcasts. It even supports password protected podcasts! To add a password protected podcast simply use the following url format when adding it:
http://<username>:<password>@<feed_url>
Replace <username> & <password> with your actual credentials, and <feed_url> with an actual url so a protected feed url might look something like the following:
http://joeblogs:joespassword@www.somesite.com/protected_podcast/feed.xml

3.0 also includes a search tab that allows you quickly search for podcasts & add them without having to type in url’s.
To delete items (or feeds) simply swipe your finger from right to left to reveal a delete button.

There are a number of outstanding development tasks & known issues (its a BETA afterall). Here is a list of known issues:

- white bar at top of add feeds & feed items page.
- downloads view is not ordered based on time.
- movie player used for all playback; so you don’t get the 30 second skip buttons like in mobilecast 2.2.x.
- even though we’re in jailbroken mode the app doesn’t run in the background.
- downloads view does not auto refresh (workaround: click the the refresh button in the downloads tab).
- the feed items view does not auto update the progress bar when a download is in progress (if you flick the table it will update though).

I hope you enjoy MobileCast, please keep an eye out in cydia for beta updates.

I am thinking about making MobileCast a shareware application i.e. try before you buy. So it will be free for 30 days, after which there will be a one time fee. The 30-day period will start from the date that you install the first non-beta release. I am interested in your thoughts on what a reasonable price for mobilecast would be, so please vote or post a comment.

  2. Here is the thing: paying for applications is in principle okay, but yours depends on a hack: that jailbrpken phones will always be available. What if one day I can’t jailbreak my phone or I don’t want to for some reason? If I am a paid client, I am in it for the long run. I want my investment protected and you are in no position to grant me that. And it doesn’t even matter if your application costs $2 or $20.

Please, let your application be free.

  3. Is there any way of simply importing my itunes opml file into this software? If so, could someone please list the steps????

  5. @Gadget:

    from: http://www.apple.com/itunes/whatson/podcasts/tips.html

“To export a list of your subscriptions, mouse over “Podcasts” in the source menu, right-click or control-click, and choose “Export.” Choose “OPML” as the format.’

Then put that opml on a web server and type the url into the relevant text box on the add/import page in MobileCast. If you don’t have easy access to a web server then you might want to check out http://www.opmlmanager.com/ I *think* they will host your opml file for you. I guess I should probably add a feature like that to podgrove.

Your certainly entitled to your opinion. If we charge for MobileCast it will be a nominal fee to help cover the cost of developing the app.

I appreciate your concerns about depending on being jailbroken & believe me we would have preferred to have been in the app store but that isn’t possible for every type of application. It appears that apple will reject any app that has even the slightest overlap with itunes or the ipod applications.

Personally, I have an extremely high degree of confidence in the jailbreaking community. There are no guarantees that future firmwares will be cracked but I’d be quite shocked if they weren’t.

You can certainly expect MobileCast to continue to work on the 2.x firmwares.

  7. I would be happy to pay for mobile cast in the app store but my issue in paying for a jailbreak app is i dont have a credit card to use something like pay pal. If your able to put out an appstore mobilecast i will be willing to pay up to 7 dollars for it, but otherwise i have no means to pay for it. Also i cant seem to get mobile cast 3.0 to download or stream right now. Once i click on something it just crashes to back to the springboard.

Let me get this straight… you’re willing to pay a total of close to $2000 over the course of 2 years to own the iPhone, but you don’t want to tip a developer a modest couple of bucks if he adds some very useful functionality to it?! Are you for real?!!

  11. I would definitely play for this app, up to $10, but once I did, I would expect some continued development and support. The Nokia Podcasting app was the most-used non-phone feature on my N80. Now with the iPhone, I am not stoked about tethering to iTunes to update. But… I really like the the player interface on the iPhone. The graphics, the integration, and particularly the way it resumes where I left off (which I didn’t have on the Nokia).

I guess I am hoping that Mobilecast can bring in the best of both worlds: automated wireless downloads (on a user-defineable period), managing the podcasts on-phone, and a great interface.

I have been playing with it a bit this weekend, and it looks like you’ve got a lot covered, and are going in the right direction.

    Thanks for this great app!

  12. I’m really looking forward to this application and have no problem paying for it as long as it works. We really need this type of app. for heavy podcast listeners on the iphone.

  13. Is there any way to have this app be nothing more than a podcast MANAGER? Optimally, I would like this app to stick to adding, downloading, and managing my podcasts, but use the ipod app to listen to them…

Am I just dreaming? I know that there is an app on cydia that can switch your iphone’s music libraries, so maybe it’d be possible to have this app add the podcasts to the music library as well? That’d be the dealbreaker for me.

My perfect podcast program: Sits as a background process and checks for new podcasts at X intervals. If there is a new podcast, download it and add it to music library to be accessible from the ipod app. (then deleting them and marking them as read after replay would be stellar too)

Sorry if this isn’t possible. I would pay ~$10 for this functionality.

  14. Love the app, and willing to pay for it!
My only concern with this version is playing podcasts in the movie player. The movie player is in landscape mode, which is a pain when the iphone is in the cradle in the car for instance.
The older version with your player was great. I realize this is a work in progress so please don’t take it as a dig at your code!
You have provided me with hours of wireless podcast enjoyment in the past and you should be rewarded for your hard work!
    Well done!

  15. Since apple did not provide the thirty second skip button feature in their podcast player your work on mobilecast is still greatly needed.

-movie player used for all playback; so you don’t get the 30 second skip buttons like in mobilecast 2.2.x. - us mobilecast users really need this.
